Website
A website is a collection of related content and resources available on the internet through a web browser. It may provide information, present a company’s services, offer products, publish educational materials, or allow users to complete actions such as making a purchase, booking a service, or submitting a form.
A website is accessed through a specific URL and typically operates under its own domain. Its files and data are stored on a server provided through a web hosting service.
How does a website work?
When a user enters an address in a browser, their device sends a request to a server. The server responds by providing the required files or data. The browser interprets this information and displays the website on the screen.
The core technologies used to create websites are:
- HTML – defines the structure and meaning of content;
- CSS – controls presentation, including colors, typography, and layout;
- JavaScript – provides interactions and dynamic functionality.
The elements that operate in the browser make up the front end. A website may also use a back end, database, content management system, and external services connected through an API.
Website vs. web page
A web page is an individual document available at a particular URL, such as a home page, contact page, or article. A website is a collection of related web pages and resources that usually operate under the same domain.
For example, a home page, service pages, blog, and contact page can all be part of a single business website. Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday language, they do not have exactly the same technical meaning.
Types of websites
Websites can serve many different purposes and provide varying levels of functionality. Common types include:
- business websites presenting a company and its services;
- landing pages created for a specific campaign or offer;
- blogs and news websites;
- portfolios showcasing projects or completed work;
- online stores supporting digital sales;
- educational platforms and membership websites;
- portals, directories, and classified advertising platforms;
- web applications that allow users to perform complex tasks.
A single website can combine several of these functions. For example, it may present a business, publish articles, and sell products through e-commerce.
Static and dynamic websites
A static website delivers files prepared in advance. Its content does not automatically change based on the user or information stored in a system, and significant content updates usually require editing the relevant files.
A dynamic website can generate content using information from a database, system settings, user activity, or external services. Online stores, user account portals, and websites built with platforms such as WordPress commonly use dynamic content.
What does a website include?
Depending on its purpose, a website may include:
- a header with a logo and navigation;
- text, images, videos, and other media;
- links to internal pages and external resources;
- contact forms, sign-up forms, or search tools;
- a product catalog, shopping cart, and checkout process;
- a footer containing business details and additional links;
- analytics, marketing tools, and third-party integrations.
Not every element displayed on a website has to be stored directly in the page’s source code. Some content may be retrieved from a database or an external system when the page is requested.
What makes a good website?
A good website should serve a clearly defined purpose and help users find the information or features they need. Important qualities include:
- a clear structure and intuitive navigation;
- fast loading times;
- responsive design and usability across different devices;
- digital accessibility;
- a secure connection protected by an SSL certificate;
- proper search engine optimization;
- accurate, understandable, and useful content;
- stable operation and regular updates.
Visual design is an important part of a website, but appearance alone does not determine its effectiveness. Usability, content quality, performance, security, and functionality suited to the audience’s needs are equally important.
