Mobile App
A mobile app, or mobile application, is software designed to run on portable devices, primarily smartphones and tablets. It allows users to perform tasks such as shopping, communicating, booking services, navigating, or managing their finances. Its interface is designed for touch input and smaller screens.
Mobile apps are commonly associated with software installed from Google Play or the App Store. Some come preinstalled on a device or are distributed internally within an organization. Web applications can also be accessed on a phone through a browser.
What are mobile apps used for?
An app’s purpose depends on its users’ needs. Common categories include:
- communication and social networking – messaging, video calls, and content sharing;
- shopping – browsing products, placing orders, and accessing loyalty programs in e-commerce;
- banking and finance – managing accounts, making payments, and tracking spending;
- transportation and navigation – planning routes, buying tickets, and booking rides;
- education and entertainment – learning languages, playing games, listening to music, and watching videos;
- business – managing work orders, communicating with customers, checking inventory, and supporting field work.
For example, a maintenance company’s app could allow a technician to check a job address, photograph a fault, and submit a report directly from the repair site.
How does a mobile app work?
An app performs some operations on the device and communicates with a server when necessary. Through an API, it can retrieve products, save bookings, synchronize information, or check order status. This can also make account data available across a user’s devices.
Depending on the operating system, hardware, and permissions granted, an app can use the camera, location services, microphone, Bluetooth, or biometric authentication. It can also display push notifications, such as an alert about a rescheduled appointment. Access to protected features and data is governed by operating system rules and the relevant user permissions.
What are the different types of mobile apps?
There are several approaches to mobile app development:
- native apps – built using technologies for a specific platform, such as Kotlin for Android or Swift for iOS; they allow functionality and interfaces to be closely tailored to that operating system;
- cross-platform apps – share a substantial portion of their code across platforms such as Android and iOS; development tools include Flutter and React Native;
- hybrid apps – use web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript inside a native container; additional modules provide access to device features, for example through Capacitor.
These categories overlap: a hybrid app can also be cross-platform. Shared code does not remove the need to test both operating systems, and the choice of technology alone does not guarantee performance or usability.
Mobile apps vs. websites and PWAs
A responsive website adapts its layout to a phone’s screen and is accessed through a URL. Users can open it from a search result or shared link without installing a separate program. An installed mobile app is a distinct piece of software that can integrate more extensively with the phone’s operating system.
A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a web application that can offer selected features associated with installed apps, such as a home screen icon, a standalone window, certain offline functions, or notifications. Availability depends on the implementation, operating system, and browser. Making a website responsive does not automatically make it a PWA.
Can a mobile app work without internet access?
Yes, if it has been designed to work offline. A calculator, saved notes, or a previously downloaded map can function without a connection. Retrieving current information and synchronizing with a server usually require internet access. Installing an app therefore does not mean that all its features will work offline.
When does a business need a mobile app?
An app makes business sense when it simplifies a recurring task. It can speed up repeat purchases, provide convenient access to a loyalty card, streamline bookings, or help employees complete work orders.
For example, a customer who regularly purchases the same supplies could use a saved product list to reorder them. The app’s value comes from saving time. If someone only needs to check a company’s services and phone number once, a responsive website may be sufficient.
If you are planning a mobile app for Android or iOS, explore our mobile app development services. We help businesses move from an initial concept and interface design to a fully developed application.
The design should address clear navigation, accessibility for people with disabilities, data protection, and unreliable connections. At TRAVI, our UI/UX design services help businesses develop interfaces and user journeys that make specific tasks easier to complete.
What affects the cost of developing a mobile app?
Development costs depend on the number and complexity of features, supported platforms, interface design, integrations, backend infrastructure, and security requirements. The budget should also cover testing, distribution, maintenance, and updates after launch.
For a new concept, a business can begin with MVP development: a working version containing the most important features. This helps establish whether people use the product and return to it before the business invests in further development.
